Add a clip to the timeline in DaVinci resolve

Adding a clip to the timeline on the edit page is one of the most common actions in DaVinci Resolve, that enable editing clips on the timeline. There are several ways to add clips to the time, each of them useful for a particular purpose. Knowing all the possibilities help to increase efficiency during projects.

Steps are very simple and easy to reproduce. A link to a video sample is available below.

How to

Drag and drop on the timeline

This is the most intuitive option, new users apply when editing on DaVinci Resolve. Actions are the following:

1. Select a clip in the media pool.
2. Drag and drop it on the timeline.

This action is called "overwrite" (shortcut F10). It overwrites all the clips previously placed on the timeline, from the whole duration of the new clip.

Quick buttons

Above the timeline, there is a bar that collects the most common actions. Three of them are used to insert new clips into the timeline:

• Insert Clip (shortcut F9): it inserts the clips exactly where the playhead is located. If the playhead is located among two clips, it adds the new clips between the previous two. In case the playhead is located in the middle of a clip, that clip is cut into two parts and the new clip is placed between those two parts.
• Overwrite Clip (shortcut F10): the new clip is placed on the timeline where the playhead was located. Any other clip is overwritten by the new clip for all its duration.
• Replace Clip (shortcut F11):
  • in case the playhead is placed over an existing clip, the new clip replaces the existing one.
  • in case the playhead is in an empty space of the timeline, between two existing clips the new clip fills the gap and eventually will be automatically cut to fit that area.

From first viewer

Adding a clip that is previewed on the first viewer allows selecting only the video or only the audio part of the clip.

From second viewer

Add a clip to the timeline using the second viewer in DaVinci Resolve.
